Keep in mind, ladies and gentlemen, that the "neighbors", the people who bought their "dream plot of land in the country", generally in the mid-late 70s, overlooked the fact that there was an operating racetrack within earshot. Several of these people did everything they could, to make the operation of the track very difficult.
It wasn't too bad, when the Spencer brothers operated the track, as they were "homies" in Williamson, and had some clout. But eventually they retired, and divested themselves of the track's operation. Subsequent owners didn't have the "local clout" that the Spencers had, and the neighbors made significant inroads in limiting the ability of the track to operate.
What I find ironic, is these same "complainers" most likely wouldn't hesitate to drive to Orchard Park, and join into the rather noisy festivities at a Bills game.................
And for those of you who are old enough, recall what happened to the Monroe County Fairgrounds racetrack, just south of Rochester. The track was laid down in the late 1930s, and operated pretty much a weekly schedule into the early-mid 1960s. Around the late 50s, the farmer who owned the land directly across the street from the track's back straight, sold the land.
A commercial home builder, it might have been Caldwell&Cook, came in, bought the land, about 50-60 acres, and built houses. Within a few years, the neighbors complained SO much, the town shut down the weekly shows. They ran a few more shows, after that, tied into the County Fair. The last time I saw a race there, was either '69 or '70, and I believe that was the last race held there.
