small block 350 running problem.

Just looking for some ideas here guys,

Have a small block 350 in a camaro.  Just rebuilt carb and have checked timing multiple times.  on a slow increase with the throttle the car seems to run fine but if i punch the accelerator quickly i get some pretty bad backfiring up through the intake and carb.    hooked a compression gauge up to #1 and let the motor run.  ONly running about 60# throughout the run.  Hooked an air line up to #1 and #7 and you could hear air leaking somewhere.  not out the carb and not out the exhaust (don't think.)

Im thinking a bad set of rings?

any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks

pulled breather today with air line attached to #1 and was getting quite a bit or air coming out the breather.

any ideas?

Try compression gauge on 1 & 7, after reading put some oil in cyl(a couple of tablespoons). Take another test, if compression raises, it's rings. If not its valves. Take these tests using starter.

my guess is valves

pulled heads yesterday and the valves def had a lot of build-up on them and i could tell they were def not seating properly.  Wanted to change heads anyways so gonna do this now.  Switching to a set of 186s.  Gonna throw those on and see if it is any better.

Hoping its not a set of rings
