ROCHESTER, N.Y. — If you have a license plate cover, it’s about time to take that off your car!
On September 1, the sale of license plate covers in New York was banned in the state’s attempt to crack down on fake or altered license plates.
According to the DMV, these covers distort a camera’s image of the plate, usually to avoid detection or toll collection. They are usually a glass or plastic covering that goes over the plate.
Drivers caught with these coverings can expect to pay no more than $500 and surrender the cover. Repeat offenders may face a 90-day suspension of their vehicle registration.
