BOSSARD GOES BACK-TO-BACK CAPTURING STATELINE’S “MEMORIAL NIGHT” SUPER LATE SPECIAL, LUNGER REMAINS UNBEATEN, AS FOUR NEW FACES REACH VICTORY LANE!

Busti, NY (July 2, 2022) by Marc Hoegerl: The New Stateline Speedway was once again blessed with excellent holiday weekend weather, as well as another action filled night of racing, which saw 145 cars fill the pits, a great crowd, and 4 pilots get their first victories of the 2022 season. After struggling earlier in 2022, Darrell Bossard seems to have finally found his rhythm by scoring convincing back-to-back victories in the Super Late Models. Dennis Lunger seems unstoppable in the RUSH Pro Mods, making it 5 out of 5 on the season. Jason Covey made his first trip to the winner’s circle in the highly competitive Pro Stocks. Jason Genco, who is no stranger to victory lane, scored his first RUSH Crate Late Model A-Main of 2022. Michael McGee, who had an impressive 2021 campaign, finally broke through for his first triumph of 2022, and Brandon Huffman won a last lap heart stopper in the Challengers to claim win #1 of the season.

The first main event to hit the speedway would be the Pro Stock Division. After two restarts, Jason Covey would take command of the field at the outset. With Matt Sampson, John Boardman, and Kyle Couchenour in tow. With Covey in full command, all eyes were on the battle for 2nd. Couchenour seemed like the fastest car on the speedway working the extreme high side, as Sampson and Boardman were using the hub. On lap 14, Couchenour looked like he was going to overtake 2nd & 3rd place running Sampson and Boardman, but would hit the cushion in turn three, spinning out, to bring out the race's final caution. Covey would weather 7 caution periods, as well as heavy lapped traffic to coast to his first A-Main win of 2022. Sampson, Boardman, Wesley McCray and Gary Fisher Jr. would round out the top five.

Next up would be a stout field of 23 competitors to take the green in the RUSH Crate Late Model feature. Regional star, Jason Genco, and Will Pinckney would lead the field to green in the 20-lap main event. Genco would wrestle the lead from Pinckney, after the races 2nd attempt to get started. As they headed down the backstretch, veteran Scott Gurdak would move into 2nd, with Matt Sipes close behind. On lap 7 with Genco in command, Sipes would take away 2nd from Gurdak, as 10th place starter, Damian Bidwell, in his 1st outing of the season, would also make his way around the fading Gurdak. A great battle would take place for the bridesmaid spot between Sipes, Bidwell, Gurdak, and Dennis Lunger. The trio would swap spots numerous times through the late stages of the event, with each competitor running different lines on the race track. With the great battle going on behind him, Genco would have no serious challenges the entire way to grab his 1st win of 2022. Sipes held on for 2nd, Bidwell would bring home a convincing 3rd place run, as Gurdak, and 13th place starter Randy Hall would round out the top five.

Third main event to hit the 1/3 semi-banked clay oval would be the Star-Studded UMP Modifieds. Veterans Butch Southwell and Michael McGee would bring the 25 car field down to Spanky Hall’s green. McGee, who seems to be on a bit of a dry spell, would grab the lead as the field would record lap 1. Southwell and Cale Crocker would tuck in behind the leader using the hub. With the 1st 3 spots staying the same through the 1st 5 laps, previous winner, and crowd favorite, Troy Johnson would take 3rd away from Crocker on Lap 6. Lap 7 would see 11th place starter Bud Watson crack the top 5, using the extreme high-side bouncing off the wall, at times. Lap 8 would once again see Crocker overpower Troy Johnson to move back into 3rd. The running order would stay the same, until Bud Watson would finally overtake Troy Johnson for 4th with 2 to go. McGee would have smooth sailing the entire distance to notch win #1 of the season. Southwell, Crocker, Bud Watson, and Troy Johnson would round out your top five.

Next on the docket would be the highly anticipated Super Late Model Special. A great field of 23 earth pounding Super Late Models would take the track that would include, World of Outlaws Late Model standout, Max Blair, as well as Hall of Famer Chub Frank, just to name a few. As the field took the green, Panama, New York’s, Jake Finnerty would take the lead. Finnerty, and opening night’s winner Greg Oakes would almost be a dead heat at the line, with Finnerty holding a slight advantage to score lap 1. Finnerty, and Oakes would enter turn 1 side-by-side, carrying that momentum down the backshoot, with Oakes gaining the top spot as the field would cross the line on lap 2. The running order would be, Oakes, Finnerty, Bossard, Blair, Hess Jr. for the next 9 laps, until Bossard would move around Finnerty for 2nd on lap 12. Oakes would see his large lead cut considerably as the field would hit heavy lapped traffic towards the halfway mark. On lap 14, Bossard would close the gap and glue himself to the leaders rear bumper. Max Blair would get a good run off the top of turn 4 to take over the 3rd spot on lap 15, giving chase to the leaders. As the top 2 were engaging lapped traffic, Bossard would finally find his opening to get around Oakes to take the lead and go uncontested the final 9 laps to score victory #2 of 2022, and a cool $2,500 payday for his efforts. Oakes, Blair, Hess Jr., and Frank rounded out the top five.

RUSH Pro Mods would take the track for the nights 5th main event. Teams have been scratching their heads all season on how to find a way to put a stop to the #71L. Tyler Oakes which looked to be the fastest car through the classes’ prelims, took the lead at the drop of the green, with veteran wheelman, Al Brewer, and Chad Ramsey in pursuit. The top 3 would stay the same, until 9th place starter, Dennis Lunger would take over 3rd on lap 5, and then take away the runner-up spot from Brewer 1 lap later. Lap 7 would see Lunger run down the leader Oakes, then easily take the top spot from Oakes on lap 8. Once Lunger got out front, it was history. As Lunger would remain unbeaten at Stateline in 2022, picking up his 5th in a row. Oakes, Brewer, Victor Earle Jr., and Brenden Warner rounded out your top five.

In the nights final event of Stateline’s holiday weekend bash, we would see the Challengers take the surface for their 12-lap main event. Previous two weeks winner, Chris Horton looked like the man to be beat as the field took the green. Brandon Huffman would lead lap 1, only to see his lead erased on lap 2, as Horton would take over the lead. Horton would hold down the lead for the next 9 laps, until out of nowhere, like he was shot out of a cannon, Tommy Labarbera would take over the top spot on lap 10. Labarbera, and Horton would put on a classic battle for the next 2 laps, until the races only caution would fly with 1 lap remaining. As the field would see the green, and white, Labarbera, Horton, and 3rd place runner Huffman would be 3 wide heading into turn 1. The 3 would make contact in a sandwich like formation in the middle of turn’s 1 & 2, with 3rd place runner Huffman taking the lead entering the backstretch. Huffman, and Labarbera would be side-by-side coming out of turn four heading for the checkereds. Huffman, and LaBarbera would make contact as they crossed the line, with Huffman winning by less than a half a car length, in arguably the most entertaining race of the evening. This would be Huffman’s 1st Stateline win of 2022. Labarbera, Nicholas Robie, Andrew Proper, and Pete Volpe rounded out the top five.
